For the first time in 20 years, an Eastland greenkeepers tournament was held at the club, and very successful it was, too.
Organisers Martin Christensen and Jamey Ferris received a marvellous response for last Wednesday’s tournament — 72 players, over 20 percent of the centre’s total playing membership, turned out.
Play started at the later time of 11am, and the weather was excellent for bowls. The format was three-bowl triples with games lasting 90 minutes. Included in each game was a power play with three points for a win and one point for a draw.
Also held were two “spiders” and raffles. Sponsors gave excellent support, and an exceptional barbecue lunch was included in the entry fee.
The tournament winners were Mo Kapua, Murray Owen and Don Green, while Kathy Carroll, Marilyn Knowles and Erin Sutherland were runners-up.
Joanne Atkins, Marion Jones and Lucy Shanks finished third, and Lorna Reeve, Jock Smith and Marty Ryan were fourth.
No doubt all those who took part will want a repeat of this popular tournament in the near future.
On the next day, the club hosted another afternoon Ryman Healthcare-Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village-sponsored optional triples tournament, with 42 players taking part.
Charlie Ure (s), Bill Scott and Pat Murton won, with four points and a differential of +17. Second place went to Gary Tocker (s), Alf Land and new member Kathryn Flaugere with four points and +9.
In third place were Murray Murton (s), Alistair Johnston and Pat Bayley, also with four points, but with a +3 differential.
TOLAGA BAY
On Sunday, the club held its annual Neil Russell Tournament, sponsored by Farmlands.
It was played as a single-entry pairs event. Unfortunately for the visitors from the city clubs, they were no match for the locals, with Murray Duncan (s) and Mike Namana running out the winners with four wins.
In the last game of the day, however, they had to withstand a strong challenge from two of their clubmates, Joanne Atkins and Ra Tautau, and scraped home 11-10.
Buddy Kururangi teamed up with Kahutia’s Neville Wagner to take third place with two wins.
Trevor Mills, from Kahutia, and local player May Tai were fourth with a win and a draw, while Poverty Bay’s Jeff Davis and Kahutia’s Dayvinia Mills finished fifth with one win.
Chas Henry and Kahutia’s Joyce Wagner could manage only one draw on the day.
All the visiting city players were overwhelmed with the club’s hospitality which included a crayfish luncheon.
The club is hoping to attract more entries from the city clubs, as well as Te Karaka, when they hold their annual Ruby and Anne Henry Optional Triples.
