Another tough day for Bay at ND tournament,Hollis, Hayes twins lead PB to victory

POVERTY Bay men are still chasing their first win at the Northern Districts twenty 20 competition in Taupo after losses to Hamilton and Bay of Plenty yesterday.

Bollywood Stars Poverty Bay, who went down to Northland on Sunday, scored 120-9 against Hamilton, who reached their target with four wickets in hand and 26 balls remaining.

Thomas Hayes (30) and Alex Gooding (30) topscored for the Bay while Craig Christophers got 28.

Hamilton were 76-4 at one stage but a fifth-wicket partnership of 42 took the game away from the Bay.

Timoti Weir was the best of the Bay bowlers, taking 3-16 off 1.4 overs.

In the Bay of Plenty clash, former Poverty Bay loan player Joe Carter thumped an unbeaten 122 off 64 deliveries in his side’s 233-3.

Poverty Bay were restricted to 118-8, with Hayes (28), Kieran Venema (22) and Weir (16 not out) the only batsmen to feature.

Poverty Bay selector Ryan Majstrovic said the tournament was a great opportunity for the squad to see where they were at against “the big boys”.

“We’ve had some good bits of cricket but not been quite yet sharp or lucky enough to put them together, and get an upset “

“There’s been good individual performances from Thomas Hayes and Alex Gooding with the bat, and Craig Christophers and Timoti Weir as all-rounders.

“Alex and Craig are great team men with so much to offer, and with the bulk of the side still very young, we’re in good stead for the future with them about.”
