A sparkling half-century from 15-year-old Patrick McInnes gave Poverty Bay a fighting chance of a second victory on day four of the Northern Districts Rangatahi Emerging Tane cricket tournament in Gisborne.

Batting at the top of the order in the Bay’s T20 match against Counties Manukau at Harry Barker Reserve, McInnes struck 56 runs off 44 balls, including seven boundaries, in the home team’s 125 all-out in 19.5 overs.

It was his second half-century of the week-long, eight-team tournament – he scored 71 against Hamilton in round one.

Counties Manukau got to the runs required in the 19th over, but not before losing five wickets.

McInnes shared a 52-run partnership with first drop Nathaniel Fearnley (21 runs off 21 balls, including two fours) while captain Taye McGuinness (13 off 12) was the only other Poverty Bay batter to reach double figures.

Matthew Moffitt picked up three wickets for 19 runs off his four overs, then top-scored for Counties Manukau with an unbeaten 33 from 35 balls.

Opener Sterling Speedy, fresh off the only century of the tournament so far, made a quickfire 31 from 20 before Connor Starck (1-26-4) claimed his prized wicket.

Riker Rolls got 2-18-4, and Fearnley and Caleb Taewa nabbed the other wickets.

Poverty Bay were outclassed by unbeaten Waikato Valley in their round five T20 game.

McGuinness (13 off 14 balls) top-scored as Poverty Bay were rolled for 57 in 13 overs – 23 extras boosting their tally.

Waikato Valley made it five wins from five games for the loss of two wickets

Heading into the last day, Sterling’s century was the score of the tournament, while McInnes and Counties Manukau’s Akaldeep Lahory had scored two half-centuries each over the week.
