IT wasn’t just on the field that Ngati Porou East Coast had problems in their Heartland Championship-opening loss to Thames Valley last weekend.

Following the Coast’s 42-13 loss the East Coast Rugby Football Union received several complaints from people who attended the match.

The complaints were in relation to the use of offensive or racist language towards match officials and visiting management/ players by some spectators.

“I want to make it quite clear that it was only a few individuals, but nevertheless it is extremely disappointing and of considerable concern,” said Ngati Porou East Coast co-coach Troy Para.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and any person or persons found to be conducting themselves in this manner will be removed from Whakarua Park and trespassed for the duration of the Heartland season or longer.

“The union considers this to be a very serious matter and we will deal with it accordingly.”

Coast supporters have a reputation for their usually good-natured banter of not only the opposition but, on occasions, their own players.

Last week, however, some individuals went beyond the pale and it is good to know that the union is taking a strong stance on the situation.

Meanwhile, the Coast face Wairarapa Bush in Masterton tomorrow without one of their top performers from last weekend.

Lock Morgan Poi was magnificent on attack and defence but suffered torn ligaments in his finger and could be out for a month.

“We’ve had a look at the video of the match and it was obvious that some of the players were still in club mode — pushing passes and looking to score off the first and second phases, instead of being patient,” Para said. “At this level of competition you need to be patient. Whenever we did string some phases together, we put Thames under pressure.

“We also want to cut out the 50/50 passes, which put us under pressure. Valley turned the ball over and one big kick put us back at the other end of the ground. We need to hang on to the ball.”

Both teams go into the match on the back of heavy losses. The Bush were thumped 79-7 by Wanganui.

Ngati Porou East Coast (1-22): Mike Chambers, Perrin Manuel, Laman Davies, Hone Haerewa, Rhys Walker, Trent Profitt, Paddy Allen, Parekura Lalaga, Ryan Buchanan, Keelan Poi, Jayden Milner, Kahu Ward, Te Wehi Wright, Te Peehi Fairlie, Kris Palmer.

Reserves: Kareti Palmer, Tim Barbarich, Manaia Nyman, Fabyan Kahaki, Tiopira Slade, Verdon Bartlett, one to be named.
