Contractors have started work on the temporary road on Waihau Road to Loisels, which has been closed since the June rain event.

A major landslide washed out part of the road at the four-kilometre mark.

Since then, residents have had walking access only past the dropout.

“The first step was to create a dump site for the material from the slip face,” a Gisborne District Council spokesperson said.

“Work’s expected to take several weeks to complete, weather dependent.

“At this stage the road won’t be open by Labour Weekend and it will only be open to residents.

“While the work is being done, residents have access to walk past the work site.”
