People longing for a much needed dip to cool off this summer can go for a swim with the latest test results from LAWA (Land Air Water Aotearoa) showing most sites to be safe for swimming.
Gisborne District Council operates a summer water monitoring programme, testing water quality at 33
of the region's popular recreational swimming spots. Summer sampling is done every week and updated on LAWA.
Based on the latest results from sites at Anaura Bay (north and south), Kaiti Yacht Club, Karakatuwhero (at SH35), Makarika Stream (at Makarika bridge, Waipiro Bay), Makorori Settlement, Mangahauini River (at Tokomaru Bay), Midway Surf Club, Sponge Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Tolaga Bay (wharf end and surf club), Turihaua and Bridge end (SH35), Uawa River, Waiapu, Waikanae Beach at Grey Street, Wainui, Waipaoa River, Waipiro Bay and Wharekahika River were considered suitable for swimming.
The council advised caution for swimming at the Hangaroa River, Rere (Falls and Rockslide), Urukokamuka Stream (near Te Wainui Marae), Turanganui River, Waimata River, and Wherowhero Lagoon.
Only the water tested at Hamanatua Stream and Waiotu were graded as unsuitable for swimming, but no data was available for three sites, Anaura Bay (North Lagoon), Lottin Point and Pouawa.
