Gisborne harbourmaster Peter Buell has urged everyone going out on a boat or jet ski to keep an eye out for large logs in the sea offshore of Gisborne and up the Coast.

Logs and debris swept out to sea by Cyclone Gabrielle continue to float about in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa Poverty Bay and around the Coast.

“We are still seeing them continue to wash ashore,” Mr Buell said.

“Some can be clearly seen out at sea, however, there are many logs that are just below the surface.

“These create a huge risk for recreational boat users and those on jet skis. Please travel at a safe speed and keep a good lookout,” Mr Buell said.

“If you’re going out on a boat, please take five to 10 minutes longer to get to your favourite spot. It’s worth taking that extra time to get there and back safely.”

Boaties and jet ski riders should also check the weather before they go out, he said.

“Make sure you wear your lifejackets and take two forms of waterproof communications with you.”

The council earlier this week urged people going to the city beaches to watch out for the wood debris that’s still washing up and for logs on the shoreline.

A 10-year-old Christchurch girl was badly hurt last Sunday when a log she was playing on along Centennial Marine Drive rolled on top of her.
