Wairoa landfill closed until Saturday after fire

A FIRE closed the Wairoa Landfill and Recycling Centre on the outskirts of the town yesterday.

Firefighters were at the site for around an hour and a half putting out the blaze.

FENZ in Wairoa sent an appliance and a tanker to the dump at around 11am.

“It was only a small fire but it took a bit of putting out,” said Wairoa chief fire officer Grant Duley.

“Luckily the dump operators had a digger with a long arm up there, and it was used to pull the heaps of rubbish apart so we could get at it.”

CFO Duley said the cause of the fire was undetermined.

The Wairoa District Council closed the landfill and recycling centre for the day.

The landfill will reopen to the public, with normal operating hours, tomorrow
