Van burns in suspicious circumstances in park

Firefighters were called to a campervan on fire in a car park at Nelson Park behind the Enterprise Cars Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Fire and Emergency NZ and police responded to the incident just after 1pm.

The vehicle was well alight when the first crew arrived.

“There was no one with it when we got there,” a senior firefighter said. “The van had been set up as a campervan with beds in the back of it. It was badly damaged and would be a total loss.”

A person was seen leaving the scene.

The cause of the fire has been treated as suspicious and police have an inquiry under way.
