Two men arrested in relation to the stabbing deaths of two men at a 21st birthday party on Saturday night have been jointly charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

They have been identified as the “uninvited” people who turned up at the party at a house in Lytton Road, sparking a fight at around 11.30pm that night.

One of them, aged 25, was arrested by police after he was discharged from Gisborne Hospital on Tuesday. He sustained what police described as “assault” injuries in the fight.

The man was remanded in custody by consent to appear in Gisborne District Court in early April.

His co-accused, aged 29, remains in custody by consent to also appear in court next month.

Their names have been suppressed at this stage.

The police homicide inquiry continues as they work their way through interviews with about 40 of the partygoers.

“We continue to make steady progress,” inquiry head Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said. “We have opened an online portal where people who have any social media footage of the incident can upload it.”

Two men badly injured in the fight remain in hospital, one in a stable condition in a ward, the other critical in ICU.

The identities of the two victims of the tragedy were yesterday formally named by police.

They were Kane Wiremu Te Paa, 30, of Wainuiomata, also known as Kane Taare-Gray, and Chrysler Stevens-Mark, 21, of Gisborne, who was celebrating his 21st birthday at the party.

The two men were cousins.

Detective Inspector de Lange told The New Zealand Herald the 100 or so partygoers were having a great night, with no problems, before the two uninvited guests turned up.

“This is a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Our thoughts are with Kane and Chrysler’s whānau,” he said.

“Police have offered support to the whānau of the two men as they plan the tangi. However, this is a deeply personal process and for them alone to plan.”

The police presence at Gisborne Hospital was suspended on Tuesday.

“But we continue to conduct ‘reassurance patrols’ in the community.”

The presence of extra police on the roads, and around the city centre has been clear to see.

“There have been no reported incidents relating to the events of Saturday night,” Det Insp de Lange said.

Family of Black Power member Kane Te Paa said he had recently become a father and was a “loving dad”.

“His life was taken too short.

“Why start these fights when at the end of the day you’re all meant to be family,” a whanau member told The NZ Herald.

Family members of Chrysler Stevens-Mark said their “hearts were heavy” at this “dark time”.

Radio NZ reported yesterday a tangi for Kane Te Paa, aka Kane Taere-Gray, would be held in Uawa.

He was taken to Te Rāwheoro Marae in Uawa last night then to Hauiti Marae this afternoon and to  going to Hinetamatea Marae for a short time.

He will be laid to rest at Anaura Bay on Friday.

Funeral details for Chrysler Stevens-Mark had not been made public by the time The Gisborne Herald went to print last night.

Police have opened an online portal for people to upload any social media footage they have of the fight at a birthday party at this house in Lytton Road, Elgin, on Saturday night. Chrysler Stevens-Mark and Kane Te Paa aka Kane Taere-Gray died.
