The Covid-attributed deaths of two Tairāwhiti residents has lifted the region’s official tally to 44.

Figures from Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora, on cases reported last week, show there are 66 active cases in Tairāwhiti.

Total Tairāwhiti cases number 26,252 since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.

The latest Tairāwhiti deaths were among 36 recorded across New Zealand last week.

The other Covid-attributed deaths by region were two from Northland, 14 from Auckland, three from Waikato, one each from Rotorua-Taupō, Taranaki, Palmerston North and Wellington, five from Canterbury, one from West Coast, and five from Otago-Southland.

Four were in their 60s, 11 were in their 70s, 11 were in their 80s and nine were aged over 90.

Seventeen were women and 19 were men.

Health NZ said  232 people with Covid-19 were in hospital.
