Two deaths attributed to Covid-19 take tally up to 34

The cause of death of two Tairāwhiti residents has been attributed to Covid-19 in latest figures released by the Ministry of Health.

The numbers cover the period of the week up to 1pm on Monday,  May 22.

They take the district’s total Covid-19 death tally to 34.

The Ministry reported 77 other Covid deaths in that week —  17 from the Auckland region, seven from Waikato, nine from Bay of Plenty, one from Lakes, two from Hawke’s Bay, one from Taranaki, six from MidCentral (Manawatu), one from Whanganui, four from the Wellington region, five from Nelson-Marlborough, 10 from Canterbury, one from West Coast, one  from South Canterbury and 12 were from Southern (Otago-Southland).

One was younger  than 10 years old, two were in their 20s, two were in their 30s, two were in their 40s, nine were in their 60s, 12 were in their 70s, 26 were in their 80s and 25 were aged over 90.

Of these people, 38 were female and 41 were male.

Gisborne Hospital currently has one inpatient with Covid-19, according to figures released yesterday by Te Whatu Ora-Tairawhiti.

“Cases are trending downward with our daily average at 10 cases reported per day,” said a spokeswoman.

“We’ve had between nine and 17 reported cases each day in this past week.

Ministry of Health figures show there have been a total of 23,948 cases in Tairāwhiti.

In the past week, to 1pm on Monday, 117 new Tairāwhiti cases were reported,  and 90 current cases.

Across the country there have been 2,362,225 cases, with 13,231 current cases and a total death tally of 2893.
