A man suspected of burgling Gisborne’s Zambrero Restaurant twice in one night is also accused of twice burgling a beauty business four days earlier.
Aidan Wesches, 40, made a brief appearance during an arrest list in Gisborne District Court yesterday, having breached bail that was granted when he first appearedon the burglary charges during the weekend.
Counsel Holly Tunstall said Wesches now consented to being remanded in custody until mental health reports, that were directed at the earlier hearing, could be compiled. The reports are to assess Wesches’ fitness to plead and sanity at the time of the offences.
Wesches was arrested and charged for the burglaries last Friday after police conducted scene examinations and viewed CCTV footage at both businesses.
He faces two counts of burgling the Bright Street restaurant overnight on Sunday, October 15, and two counts of burgling Pretty Nails and Beauty, in Gladstone Road, overnight on Wednesday, October 11.
He already had other active charges pending before the court — for allegedly getting into a vehicle and having a screw driver for that purpose on August 22, this year; and for breaching bail.
News of the burglary at Zambrero attracted high public interest after the couple who own the business told The Gisborne Herald the loss caused — $13,000 in stolen stock and cash and three days of lost trading — could mean they have to downsize and make redundancies.
