Yet another low that has swung out of the sub-tropics is delivering doses of rain and wind, especially to the northern end of the Gisborne region.
From this morning, MetService was expecting 50 to 90 millimetres about the ranges from Tolaga Bay north, but less about the coast, and hadissued an Orange Rain Warning.
The forecasters said thunderstorms and localised downpours were possible today, with peak rainfall rates of 15 to 25 millimetres an hour — “possibly more”.
For Saturday, they also say there is “moderate confidence” of rainfall accumulations reaching warning criteria about eastern Bay of Plenty and the ranges of Gisborne.
Travellers were warned to watch for surface flooding and slips.
Wind and rain were expected to continue through to 7pm tonight, with north-east winds up to gale-force in exposed places.
On Saturday severe west to south-west gales are forecast over Northland, Auckland, northern Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula and the western Bay of Plenty on Saturday.
