Midway were named Club of the Year last night at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand Gisborne-Tairāwhiti Awards of Excellence for the 2022/23 season.

The club operated out of containers next to their clubhouse site while their new complex was being built alongside.

Dawson Building Midway’s head coach Jack Gavin took out the Coach of the Year award, after a testing summer season which hampered training efforts.

“Jack was able to adapt his training plans to ensure both senior and junior athletes were prepared for their events taking home a number of medals at local, regional and national events,” said Avan Polo, SLSNZ Eastern Region manager.

Jared Phelps, Midway’s surf sports convenor and Volunteer Coach of the Year said, “In true Jack style he has hit the ground running at a thousand miles an hour since taking charge of the Midway training squads last season and he hasn’t slowed since!”

Midway also won the all-important Patrol Club of the Year award.

The other Supreme Award went to Riversun Wainui’s Adam Glenister, named Volunteer of the Year.

“In September 2022 he took on the role of club chair and exhibited maturity and level-headedness in leading his patrol and the club,” Mr Polo said.

Glenister completed 18 hours of patrol during the 2022/23 season, and as a member of the Gisborne Search and Rescue (SAR) squad, he participated in around 10 different call-out jobs.

“The amount of ‘unseen’ time Adam puts into the club and local SAR area is truly remarkable, said Belinda Slement, Wainui SLSC director of lifesaving.

Ana Naden from Kaiaponi Farms Waikanae took home the Pacific Medicare Volunteer Lifeguard of the Year Award.

“Her effective leadership style has created a fun and engaging environment that has made her team members reluctant to change groups.  They feel valued and appreciate their time spent on patrol,” Mr Polo said.

Nigel Hope, Waikanae patrol coordinator, said, “Ana is quickly becoming an incredible asset to the club and the movement.”

Dion Williams, from Wainui SLSC, was crowned Surf Official of the Year.

“He’s shown tremendous commitment to lifesaving sport, not only in coaching but also in training and management,” Mr Polo said.

Midway’s other awards last night included Rama Robertson receiving the Instructor of the Year award, and the Patrol Captain of the Year award.
