THE next generation of Gisborne surfers enhanced their skills and technique when the Art of Surfing’s high-performance coach Matt Scorringe visited over the weekend.
Junior surfers in the Gisborne team that will host the National Scholastic Championships in late September took to the waves at The Pipe on Saturday tobenefit from Scorringe’s expertise.
Mr Scorringe’s coaching programme includes venue analysis and peak positioning overview, video review using state-of-the-art analysis software, competition heat drills and team building.
He also provided coaching for recreational surfers on Sunday. Mr Scorringe said there were some promising young surfers in the Gisborne scholastic team, including Dayna Story who has previously represented New Zealand and, according to Scorringe, only just missed out on selection this year.
Gisborne was definitely a strong surfing region. The public should be aware of the fine work Gisborne Boardriders and parents provided in supporting the rep surfers, he said.
He competed on the world junior surfing circuit before becoming the “personal filmer and caddy” of professional surfer Josh Kerr.
After a serious illness, he returned to the New Zealand tour as a competitor before becoming a surfing photographer for Billabong.
Mr Scorringe started The Art of Surfing three years ago but had coached previously. He will return to Gisborne for the National Scholastic Championships as coach of the Taranaki team.
The National Scholastic Championships will be held from September 28 to October 2, and 12 regional teams from around the country will compete at the five-day event over seven age divisions.
