GENERATIONS of Star Wars fans were out in force in Gisborne last night for the midnight premiere of the new movie The Force Awakens.

It was a sold-out show at the Odeon Multiplex, with more than 200 people buying tickets.

Some wore costumes of famous Star Wars characters like Princess Leia and Darth Vader. Others, like first-generation fan Johnny Pantha, were low-key in their attire but enthusiastic nonetheless.

“Star Wars spans over three generations,” Johnny said. “People love the storyline. Knights of old put into the future, swords swapped for lightsabres.”

He remembered watching the premiere of the Phantom Menace at the Odeon in 1999.

“It was sold out and some people were sitting in the aisle.”

The new movie was action packed and stayed true to the original Star Wars model, he said.

“They recycled a lot of the original Star Wars. It was close to the original three.”

It is set up perfectly for a sequel.

“I cannot wait to see how the plot unravels.”

People love Star Wars for its classic good-versus-bad plot structure, another original fan, Matt King said.

“It is the old story retold — protagonist overcomes evil and tyranny, yin and yang, dark and light — and has themes from the Second World War.

“The Stormtroopers are like the Nazis and rebels are working for the common good.”

The Force Awakens stayed true to the original films with its humour and quirkiness, he said.

“I am hooked for the next one.”

New-generation fan Zoe Stallmach, 11, donned a Darth Vader costume for the film and said it was the best of the lot.

“There was lots of eye candy, like good spaceships and epic graphics. I am really looking forward to the next one.”

The film concluded with a round of applause from the audience, who then filtered out of the theatre to the classic soundtrack as the credits rolled.

Fans will have to wait another year to find out what happens in the sequel but speculation has already started.
