Cyclone Gabrielle’s impacts are still being felt at Tauwhareparae Farms.

The farm is owned by Gisborne Holdings Ltd, the commercial arm of Gisborne District Council.

“The two cyclones Hale and Gabrielle have caused damage to some areas at the farm, including dangerous slips, washed-out fencing, and eroded tracks. In addition, power is still being supplied via generators and access remains very limited,” GHL board chair John Rae said.

“The staff, however, are in good spirits and a significant effort has been made to ensure their safety and comfort during the difficult times during and post Gabrielle.

“Many of the badly affected areas, also identified by GDC as highly erodible, had already been earmarked and were in the process of retirement by management.

“Recent events have confirmed this strategy and have accelerated the retirement of poor and/or non-effective hectares.”

The impact of the cyclone has also delayed a review into GHL’s assets as the GHL board takes additional time to reflect on a post-cyclone Tairāwhiti.

“The board will be providing an update/presentation of its current thinking to GDC councillors later in April,” Mr Rae said.
