Quick action by a surfer prevented a possible tragedy at the southern end of Wainui Beach early Saturday evening after strong winds blew two children on an inflatable toy out to sea.
A witness said the north-westerly blew the youngsters at least 100 metres off the beach.
“We were onour way down to the beach with our inflatable boat to go out and lay some crayfish pots,” he said.
“A panic-stricken parent came running up to us and asked us to help.
“By the time we got our boat down to the water a surfer on a kneeboard had taken the children in tow, brought them back to the breakers line, then safely on to the shore.
