Summer looks likely to be back later in the week

BRING IT BACK: Temperatures should be back up around 27C on Thursday and Friday of this week, the MetService has forecast.

Swell conditions here will not reach warning levels this week, after a cyclone to the east of New Zealand was downgraded.

Surf Life Saving NZ issued a warning of strong swells over the weekend as remnants of Tropical Cyclone Tino were expected to create large waves from the Pacific Ocean.

However, former cyclone Tino has dissipated, meaning swells will reach a high point of about 2.5m to 2.7m around parts of the East Cape, MetService meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree said.

“Mainly in upper parts around Hick's Bay to Tolaga Bay, with Gisborne, swells probably won't reach much more than 2m at the maximum wave height and it doesn't meet any of our criteria (for a warning).”

Winds were not expected to be very strong and the weather was expected to be fine.

“It's still pretty cloudy today but from tomorrow that should be breaking into fine spells and southerlies dying out in the later part of the week.”

Recent drizzly conditions should continue to hang around today but should clear up tomorrow.

“As the week goes on it will be fining up.”

The MetService forecast shows temperatures of around 20C in the early part of the week, rising to 27C on Thursday and Friday.
