I want to put a question to the “town planners” and so-called experts in organising tourist events in Gisborne. Why have all of you ignored the most focal, vacant and ugly piece of land in the district?

I am going to leave out the old prison at Midway for something else — the old railway station.

It has a number of existing buildings and plenty of parking with room for lots more to add at little cost.

Funnily enough, the rail line goes through the middle. What a great first stop!

Existing buildings and heaps of room for sellers and buyers — what a great place to have the farmers’ market.

I remember my father wanting to have no buildings on the seaward side of the beach along the existing road. He lost that argument but I think Gisborne lost a lot more.
