The first two rebuilds of New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) annual Tairāwhiti road renewal programme on State Highway 35 has been completed at Wharekahika-Hicks Bay and Gudgeons Hill.
“Both sites were swept and line-marked earlier this week and are ready for driving,” NZTA said in a statement.
The Wharekahika-Hicks Bayrebuild site received a final seal on the new road surface last week. This involved two coats of hot bitumen and layers of chips being appled, then rolled to lock everything into place.
NZTA teams have moved further down SH35 to rebuild sites near Poroporo River Bridge, Tikitiki and Ngarimu Hill.
Work on two more rebuild sites are due to start between Waipiro and Te Puia Hot Springs.
NZTA advises drivers to “allow extra time” for their travels on SH35, follow traffic management signs and take care around road workers.
Meanwhile, NZTA is reminding motorists that a stretch of State Highway 2 at Devil’s Elbow will be closed for nightly work from Sundays to Thursdays (starting this Sunday) between 9pm-5am up to December 5. There will be no viable detours. The highway will reopen each Friday from 5am and will remain open Friday and Saturday nights.
