One person has died following a crash near Wairoa.

The single-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 was reported just before 5.30pm on Monday.

Police said the person died at the scene despite the best efforts of first responders.

A second person in the vehicle received moderate injuries and was taken to hospital.

SH2 was closed between Ohuia Rd and Iwitea Rd for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit examined the crash scene.

The road reopened at around 11pm.
