Speedway venue a hit

Members of the Gisborne Caravan and Camping Club are raving about Eastland Group Speedway as a venue for last weekend's regional rally.

Club president Rex Stewart said about 50 people and 30 caravans and motor homes attended the weekend event. The venue could be used to host the national rally next Easter, he said.

“It went very well.Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They thought the venue was really great and everybody went away very happy.

“We are actually holding the national rally here at Easter and people want to go back to the speedway for that because the venue was so good.”

Mr Stewart said people attended the event from around the eastern region, comprising Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairoa, from Friday to Sunday.

“There were events organised. We watched the steam train go through and we had a display of vintage cars come down. We had a few games and a pancake breakfast on the Sunday. Mainly it was a relaxing weekend.”

Mr Stewart said interest in camping and caravanning remained positive.

“In the past few weeks, we've signed up four new members. People are interested in caravanning and we don't just have caravans, we have motorhomes as well.”
