Warning: Graphic images

Animal welfare organisations have contacted police after a Facebook post showing sheep struck by arrows in Tokomaru Bay.

In the post, a sheep is pictured with an arrow in its side. In another picture, a sheep with two arrows in its side is lying on the ground, possibly dead.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said it had contacted the police.

“MPI animal welfare is aware of the social media post showing what appears to be an arrow in a sheep near Tokomaru Bay.

“We have referred the matter to NZ Police and will assist if needed,” Tom Teneti, MPI’s district manager animal welfare and NAIT compliance (central), said.

The SPCA was also worried about the fate of the sheep.

“SPCA is very concerned to hear that someone harmed livestock in this manner. We understand the matter has been referred to NZ Police and we are unable to comment further,” inspectorate operations manager Alan Wilson said.

Federated Farmers Gisborne – Wairoa president Charlie Reynolds said it was “disgraceful and cruel behaviour”.

“I hope whoever did this can be found, and that the police take action.”

Police said yesterday that they had not received any reports of sheep shot with arrows in the area, and were waiting for the matter to be reported before making a statement.

Gisborne District Council said it had not been notified of the incident.
