Smoke inhalation after pot catches fire on stove

A man was taken to Gisborne Hospital for treatment yesterday after suffering  smoke inhalation after a pot of oil overheated and caught fire on the stove at a house in Russell Street.

Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the incident a few minutes before midday.

“The man had moved the burning pot outside and suffered smoke inhalation in the process,” a senior firefighter said.

Firefighters assisted with first aid until the ambulance arrived.

The man was Status 2 (serious) when transported to hospital, an ambulance officer said.

“There was minimal damage caused to the kitchen,” the senior firefighter said.

“It was superficial damage.”

Emergency services were called to a two-car crash at the corner of Wainui Road and Matthews Road at around 1.30pm yesterday.

The two women in the vehicles were checked over at the scene by ambulance staff but did not need to go to hospital.

One of the women got trapped inside her vehicle and firefighters helped get her out.
