The five Tairawhiti firefighters who tackled the stairs of the Sky Tower on Saturday posted good times and raised more than $7000 for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ cause. This year’s overall total surpassed $1.3 million.

Tamanui Hill raced up 51 floors in 17 minutes 6 seconds — 167th in the donned and started open male category.

Quentin Hamilton clocked 28:12 to place 56th in the donned open male category. Several Tairawhiti firefighters took on the Firefighter of Steel challenge requiring them to climb to level 60 of the tower in full kit including a steel cylinder, which is 9kg heavier than a carbon cylinder.

Dion Wilson recorded 18:28 (sixth in the masters), Judah Theobald 18:51 (14th in the open) and Robin Sneddon 19:06 (ninth in the masters).

It was Sneddon’s 10th climb and he received a carved taonga in recognition of his achievement.
