The coastal container ship Rangitata docked at Eastland Port yesterday, unloaded 32 empty containers, then loaded 23 full of meat and bonemeal for shipment to Napier.
It was the ship’s sixth visit to the port.
“The container shipping on the Rangitata is going well,” a port spokeswoman said. The build-up
of shipping in the Bay was due to the considerable increase in the cart-in of logs to the port since Cyclone Gabrielle, she said.
“Many logs that were due to go to Napier Port have been forced to come to our port with the road closure. This has meant exporters are booking in ships to keep up with the demand.”
Five log ships were at anchor in the Bay yesterday at one stage, with another six due between now and April 30. The Rangitata is due back next week, “with a very special delivery of construction materials for damaged bridges in our region”.
