Six60 fans are being encouraged to get in early to secure tickets when the band play on the East Coast and in Gisborne as part of their Grassroots Tour of the country in April/May.

The 23-show tour, being promoted as “an intimate tour” of venues “off the beaten track”, features shows at Te Puka Tavern in Tokomaru Bay on Monday, April 22, and the War Memorial Theatre in Gisborne the following night.

The band are rearranging some of their biggest hits into acoustic and unplugged stripped-back versions for the tour and will be recording each show for a Best of The Grassroots Tour album “offering fans a tangible piece of New Zealand music history”.

The tour will start at lead singer Matiu Walters’ marae Pōtahi in Te Kao (Northland) on April 9.

Other venues include Kaitaia, Piha, New Plymouth, Taupō, Feilding, Greymouth, Gore, Oamaru, Waipara and Stewart Island, where the tour will end on May 14.

“When Six60 first came to us about doing an intimate tour, we all thought they were thinking Spark Arena, TSB Arena, Wolfbrook Arena . . . it then became clear that the boys meant proper intimate,” said Dave Munro of booking agents Eccles Entertainment. “So going from 50,000 people in a stadium to literally 150 capacity venues . . . but we know what greatness this band are capable of and here they are pushing themselves once again.”

Echoing the sentiments of one of their most popular songs, Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō/Don’t Forget Your Roots, the tour will celebrate the essence of music, the band’s commitment to their roots and the bond they share with their fans.

“For years on social media, fans have been asking us to record acoustic versions of our songs, for weddings, funerals and everything in between,” the band said in a statement.

“We felt that if we were ever going to do it we wanted to do it with our fans. That’s what excites us — bringing the people that made us the band we are, that made the songs into the hits they are, along for the ride.

“We can’t wait to visit these special pockets of Aotearoa and bring these songs to life in a way we have never done before.”

The one-night-only format in each town means each performance will be unique and exclusive.

The concerts will be opened by Boston-Born, Hawke’s Bay-raised artist Makayla — the most recent signing to Six60’s label Massive Records.

Tickets are limited and go on general sale from March 4 (pre-sale is from 12pm tomorrow to 12pm Friday).
