I write on behalf of The Moananui Longboard Club who have been mentioned kindly in a recent Gisborne Herald. Thank you for printing those fine words.
We, as a club, must recognise “Mr Gisby” and company for the collective “great example” they set in their sporting achievements, at the latest New Zealand Surfing Championships. Us younger ones look to them as exemplars, striving for fitness and health as “Silver Surfers” 70 years-plus. Older athletes do need more recognition and your paper does that.
In Hawaii I noted surf riders in their 80s to 90s still in the water.
I believe your “Silver Surfers” here can do the same, because they are strong in spirit and young at heart.
Most surf devotees fade or fizzle out of the sport by the time they are 65. Our surviving older icons remain as a beacon to guide us as we ride upon the waves of life.
