Motorists are being warned to expect delays on State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge today.

The highway was closed earlier today after after fresh material came down overnight.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said the debris overwhelmed slip‑protection barriers, spilling on to the road.

In an updated statement, the roading agency said the highway has now reopened to traffic.

“Motorists can expect delays today as the team continue to clear debris.”
