Police suspect a gang of youths are responsible for the latest and other car thefts and break-ins in Gisborne.

A spate of such incidents occurred on Tuesday night.

“Overnight Tuesday/Wednesday, police were made aware of at least four stolen vehicles in the Gisborne area,” police said.

“Some of the vehicles were located being driven in a dangerous manner. There were also a couple of reports of damage to vehicles that appear to have been broken into but not taken.

“Our inquiries are ongoing.”

No arrests had been made as of yet.

One victim from Tuesday night said the offenders smashed a side window of his car and wrecked the ignition system.

“They were unable to take the vehicle but caused significant damage. I was absolutely gutted at the degree of damage caused.”

In an incident a few months ago, a car was stolen from the driveway of a house in the inner city and police later located it in outer Kaiti.

The owner said it was the second time thieves had broken into his vehicle.

“It took the best part of a month to get it back after repairs were completed. Police told me that night there was a group of young people involved, targeting cars for the fun of it.”
