Thieves have targeted a rescue buoy positioned outside the Wainui Surf Life Saving Club for use by the public in surf emergencies.

Wainui Surf Life Saving Club officials have been left dismayed and disappointed at the theft of a vital piece of surf race equipment from outside its clubhouse.

The new rescue buoy available at Wainui Beach by the clubhouse was stolen and the stand it was mounted on intentionally damaged, the club said on social media.

“This buoy is there to help anyone in an emergency – it could be the difference between life and death.

“We have security camera footage and the matter has been reported to police,” the club said.

“If you see the buoy, or have any information about where it might be, please get in touch with us.

“This is equipment is for our whole community’s safety so we can keep Wainui Beach safe for everyone.”

Surf Life Saving New Zealand will provide a replacement.
