Sandra Matthews

Sandra Matthews

Gisborne's Sandra Matthews is standing for election to the Beef + Lamb New Zealand board of directors, an election that was postponed due to Cyclone Gabrielle.

Voting papers were sent out on April 12 and should start arriving in the mail this week.

The Eastern North Island region covers Wairarapa, Tararua, Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti.

Mrs Matthews is the only Tairāwhiti candidate.

There has never been anyone from this region on the Beef + Lamb NZ board.

“If elected I will be working really hard to ensure we have a strong and confident voice to represent the levy payers of our Tairāwhiti region, and those of the wider Eastern North Island region,” Mrs Matthews said.

“I place priority on supporting and strengthening farmers who support the economic and social viability of our rural communities.

“There is a disconnect between our industry governance leadership and grassroots farmers, so with my expertise in bringing farmers and rural communities together, along with my professional and governance experience, I can add a broader area of expertise and value to the board of B+LNZ to benefit farmers who are being represented.”

Mrs Matthews is a proud food producer.

She and husband Ian farm Te Kopae Station, a 536ha sheep and beef hill country property at Rere.

“My family, farm and personal values are at the heart of everything I do.

“I have a financial and coaching background and run my own consultancy business working with farmers to grow efficient and viable agri-businesses.”

Mrs Matthews is board chair of Rural Women New Zealand and sits on the Risk, Audit and Finance Committee, is chair of Rural Communities Trust, and a director of Endometriosis New Zealand.

“With my governance experience I am able to contribute to effective engagement and communication, financial acumen and change-management skills.

“I believe in farmers and rural communities, and I don’t think they are being listened to right now,” Mrs Matthews said.

“Farmers deserve their voice to be supported and strengthened.

“I have the time to commit to the B+LNZ director role and will work hard to ensure farmers are listened to.”
