Relay for Life switches to DIY after cyclone

Like Covid-19 before it, Cyclone Gabrielle has forced the Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society to adapt its Relay for Life, usually held at one venue.

As recently as the end of January, the society was looking forward to the event returning to the popular venue of the A&P Showgrounds next weekend, March 25 and 26.

Instead the Cancer Society will contact teams already registered to help them organise their own relay.

They will be asked to choose a day, time and venue that suits them.

The Light up the Night candle bag ceremony will go ahead.

It will be held in the front yard of the Cancer Society's headquarters, at 718 Gladstone Road, on March 25.

Supporters are asked to purchase a candle bag, decorate it and then return it to the Cancer Society who will use it to “light up the night”.

The Cancer Society is open from 9am to 3pm, Monday through to Thursday, and from 9am to noon, on Friday.
