Police have commented on the snatch and run theft of a Gisborne man’s wallet and cellphone at the weekend and have urged people to ensure the security of their valuables when out in public.
A man’s wallet and cellphone were stolen from right in front of him as he sat
having coffee on Sunday morning at a table on the footpath outside a city cafe.
The thief lunged at his table, grabbed the items and ran off before the man could do anything to stop him.
“Small, valuable items such as wallets and cell phones are desirable targets for opportunistic thieves, and we encourage people to ensure these items are secure at all times,” a police spokesman said.
“If you are out in public and leave your spot for a moment, take your belongings with you. It takes just a second for an opportunistic thief to strike.
