Some quality cattle were presented at Tuesday’s Matawhero Cattle Fair, with about 850 sent for sale.

Prices paid lifted from the December fair, bidding was brisk and many pens were sold to buyers from out of this district.

Rakopu Farms Ltd, at Tolaga Bay, offered their annual draft of 2.5 year Angus steers. Their first pen of 32, weighing 560 kgs, sold for $1850 ($3.30/kg).

Their second cut of 10, weighing 527 kgs, made $1700.

In January 2023, their top pen of 22 weighed 558 kgs and fetched $1790.

Holmdale Farm (McBreen), at Waingake, received best price of $1370 for their pen of six Angus and white-face 18-month steers, which weighed 343 kgs.

AR and EG Yager sold seven fat Friesian Hereford cross 2.5 year heifers, weighing 456 kgs, for $1345.

An attractive line of 24 Angus 18-month bulls from the Waimata Station Partnership fetched $1290.  These weighed 366 kgs.

MA cows $2.31-$1.98; 2.5 yr steers $3.80-$2.96; 18-month steers $4.18-$3.80; 2.5 yr heifers $3.46-$2.61; 18-month heifers $3.58-$3.06;  18-month bulls $3.83-$3.31.

2.5 yr heifers: AR&EG Yager, 7, $1345, 6, $1200; Lorraine Ward, 5, $1300; Treble B Trust, 3, $1280, 3, $1200; Fernside Station, 15, $1270, 15, $1260, 20, $1165, 20, $1060, 7, $910; Holmdale Farm (McBreen), 11, $1245; Matuku Trust, 13, $1170; Bushy Knoll Forest Ltd, 8, $1070; Ormond Wainui, 8, $1050.
