A person living in a house in Salisbury Road was treated by ambulance officers for the effects of smoke inhalation after a pot of food on the stove overheated on Saturday night.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called to the house at around midnight.

“The person in the house got out OK apart from the effects of inhaling the smoke,” a senior firefighter said.

“We removed the pot of smoking food outside and used a positive pressure ventilation system to clear away the smoke that had built up inside the home.”

The firefighter said it was the same all-too-familiar story — “People must keep looking while they are cooking.”

Fire crews were sent to Centennial Marine Drive on Saturday at about 6.30am after an area of driftwood on the beach caught fire.

An appliance and a water tanker, plus rural fire units, responded. They were there for a couple of hours putting out what was described as a “fairly sizeable fire”.
