“Rates are going up 6 percent or more over the next few years. Spend the money on wastewater,” they said.
Others in the “no” camp agreed.
“Money would be better spent on cleaning up our rivers and streams. No more sewage flowing in when it rains — not a good look for our city.”
Another anonymous commenter against the project said, “I wonder how many residents know that the cycleway money is being diverted from roading?”
Those in favour of extending the walkway and cycleway said it was long overdue.
“As a cyclist I couldn't be happier. Build it and they'll come, just like the Oneroa walkway and cycleway.”
Another online voter said the project would be a gem for tourism and the community.
“Being able to travel from Campion to Wainui without going on the road.”
Safety for cyclists was a key theme to those who supported the project.
“To move around the town without having to use the streets. No dangerous driveways to cross.”
Another supporter said when there was a network of connected paths, parents would be happy to allow their youngsters to go to school and after-school activities independently.
“Cars will be used less for short trips.”
