POLICE have warned the public to be aware of a telephone scam that has targeted people in this district, usually the elderly.

They encourage family members to talk to their elderly relatives and make sure they do not fall into this trap.

“In this case a person is contacted by someone who tells the victim they are owed a refund and they will receive a cheque,” said Sergeant Dean Plowman.

“In order for this to happen, the person is asked to purchase hundreds or thousands of dollars-worth of online vouchers, like iTunes vouchers, and provide their bank details to the call-taker.

“After that the scammer makes no further contact and the person is left out of pocket.”

Sergeant Plowman said anyone who receives such a call should hang up immediately.

“If it does not seem right, be cautious, double-check the details of the person on the other end of the line and hang up immediately.

“Do not reply to an email if it does not add up,” he said.

“Look after your personal details in the same way you would your wallet and other possessions.

“Do not trust anyone who offers you a reward that you have to pay for first.”

He said anyone targeted by the scam should either contact police or visit Consumer Protection’s Scamwatch website
