Police are appealing for information after a serious assault at a Mahia address.

On Saturday, February 28, about 11.30pm, an uninvited man entered a Newcastle St address in Mahia township and assaulted an occupant, police said.

Another occupant hit the attacker in the head with a golf club, inflicting head and facial injuries.

“As a result, the man has fled on a side-by-side quad bike down Newcastle St and on to Weld St,” police said.

“This is a very serious incident ... in a place where the victim should have been able to feel safe.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and both occupants were understandably very shaken.”

The intruder was in his 30s or 40s, about 185.4cm to 190.5cm (6’1-6’3) tall, chubby, with short black hair and a receding hairline.

He was wearing a white singlet and jeans.

Anyone who has seen a man matching this description, or with unexplained head injuries, is asked to contact police.

“Additionally, we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed a dark-coloured quad bike in the Newcastle St and Weld St areas between 11pm and midnight on that Saturday night, or who has CCTV or dashcam footage of the area.”

Information can be provided to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 and clicking “update report”, or by calling 105. Quote the file number 260301/0548.

“You can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800555111.”
