Police believe their operation targeting gangs and organised crime in the region has been having an impact, particularly in relation to firearms incidents and methamphetamine supply.
Operation Kotare’s aim was to prevent gang violence and disrupt methamphetamine supply in the community.
The team has been conducting investigative and preventative activitiesacross Te Tairāwhiti.
“These activities include a number of arrests in March, including 10 gang members arrested the week of March 6 on a range of charges including unlawful possession of firearms and possession of class A drugs, said operation lead Inspector Darren Paki.
Multiple search warrants were also conducted on March 17 in Gisborne and Tauranga, resulting in the seizure of $40,000, 16g of methamphetamine, and three men arrested for charges including possession of methamphetamine for supply, and unlawful possession of firearms.
“We have noticed that firearms incidents have reduced and believe that our focus in removing illegal firearms from people who shouldn’t have them is having an impact,” Insp Paki said.
“We also know that we are having an impact on methamphetamine availability in the community.
“Operation Kōtare is dedicated to making our community safer through strong enforcement tactics, and sustainable prevention actions with our community, Iwi and agency partners.”
Insp Paki said police as part of the operation engage with their partners and support community-led initiatives that provide mentorship for young people and engage them in education.
