Police say they took a “high-risk individual” off Gisborne’s streets in an operation on Wednesday afternoon.
The man was sought in relation to alleged serious and violent offending and faces new charges stemming from his time allegedly evading police, Tairāwhiti Area Commander Inspector Danny Kirk said in a statement.
“Policearrested the suspect about 3pm yesterday at the intersection of Stout St and Atkinson St. Due to the nature of what this individual was wanted for, there was a significant police response, and our presence would have been very noticeable to anyone in the area,” Kirk said.
“I want to thank anyone who was inconvenienced by this for their understanding. While we aim to minimise disruption to the public, in this case the response was necessary to ensure the safety of the community and police.
“This was a high-risk individual wanted on charges of serious and violent offending.”
Kirk said the man was expected to appear in the Gisborne District Court today, charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, commission of a crime with a firearm and escaping custody.
Police said further charges were possible, as other investigations continue.
Police commended the efforts of the police officers who located the individual.
