Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern kicked off the nation’s commemoration of 125 years of women’s suffrage this year, taking up the role of guest speaker at a special breakfast event co-hosted by Gisborne Business and Professional Women’s Federation and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Ms Ardern’s speech focused on how
some very ordinary women become extraordinary and of the role of other people, like the suffragettes, who laid the path for others.
About 200 people enjoyed the breakfast at the Emerald Hotel.
As well as her usual entourage of security and aides, Ms Ardern was joined by her partner, Gisborne’s Clarke Gayford, mother-in-law Peri Gayford and daughter Neve. Described as the country’s “royal family” by a taxi driver, the family were due to fly out this afternoon.
After the event, she took time to talk to people and take selfies.
