A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

I am the Mum/Nan of basketball fanatics the Tapsell whānau, who with their partners, children and friends give their unconditional and dedicated time, commitment, passion and joy to the beautiful whānau sport of basketball.

The strength, participation and growth that this sport has in Gisborne is phenomenal, exciting and inspiring.

For me as a Māori mama/nan, I am thrilled to support, watch and patronise this sport that brings and attracts so many Māori.

However, the sport in Turanganui/Gisborne actually has to limit and refuse entry to eager, talented and aspiring entrants, or just whānau and teams wishing to participate, because we cannot accommodate the numbers.

I therefore beseech the powers-that-be to please strongly support and seriously push for sports like basketball, volleyball and others to have their own dedicated venue.

It will bring revenue to Turanganui/Gisborne as we would then be able to host events — but mainly and most importantly, it will strengthen and uplift our own sporting participation, health and wellbeing status! Karawhiua! Na,

Rakairoa Maraki
