A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

The Gisborne Herald caught wind of a story that at first sounded like someone was telling porkies.

About 20 piglets were spotted wandering around Wainui on Monday after a trailer of them came off the back of a vehicle.

At least one member of the public witnessed the swine go airborne.

“Saw them fly out of a trailer that had broken off a ute at 80km on the bridge. Hectic. Flying pigs.”

Another eyewitness told The Herald: “Yeah, the driver nearly killed a carload of people going the other way.

“We were right behind him. I thought he would have loaded them up after. Be some battered and bruised piggies in that bunch.”

A communications team member from the Gisborne District Council said they received a call about the incident and animal control attended soon afterwards.

They did not find any hiding hogs. However, a Facebook comment shed some light.

“There were about 20 of them and they were claimed by the owner after a photo of them wandering around the Okitu Bridge was posted on a local Facebook page.”

It is not known if the pigs were heading for the market.
