The petition started in support of the Comet Swimming Club, and opposing the decision to award the learn to swim contract at the new Kiwa Pools to an Australian company, has gone well past 3000.

As of yesterday the online version of the petition had attracted 2634 signatures.

Hard copy petition forms that have been made widely available have attracted an estimated 1000-plus signatures.

“It’s been a huge response,” one of the petition organisers said.

It will be presented to Gisborne District Council in time for the full council meeting next week.

Comet general manager Rochelle Somerton has thanked the community for their support.

“We have had hundreds of texts, emails, and phone calls from people expressing their support, and that includes calls from outside of Gisborne.

“We’ve also had calls from trusts offering their financial support.
