The big money in the Enterprise Cars  Autosure NZ Bay Bonanza fishing competition was shared at the end of what was described as a beautiful final day’s fishing on Sunday.

Around 640 anglers onboard 160 boats enjoyed what Gisborne-Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club President Roger Faber called a “perfect” day on the water.

“Friday’s opening day was cancelled and Saturday was still a bit lumpy but fishable, but Sunday was beautiful, perfect,” he said.

Alexander Meredith and Mike Lloyd shared the Lucky Angler top prize of $40,000 put up to mark the 40th year of the contest.

The heaviest marlin was landed by Peter Puddick — a broadbill swordfish weighing 180.8 kilograms, caught from the boat Kingfisher.

A 119.2kg blue marlin caught by 12-year-old Sam Matthews, off Alma G, was second.

Leon Lewis won the heaviest tuna prize with a 38.6kg catch off the boat Good Newz.

“It was a hugely successful tournament,” Mr Faber said.

“We had record entry numbers, and some excellent fish come in over the period, especially on Sunday with those beautiful sea conditions.”

The club is now gearing up for its other major contest of the year — the marlin and tuna tournament from February 15 to 18.

A scene out of Jaws for crew

A fishing story from the contest that those close to the action will tell for a few years involved a crew fishing off the Penguins on Saturday,

The location is about 16 nautical miles off Tatapouri, north of the Aerial Reef.

One of the fishermen told The Herald they had caught something sizeable and were reeling it in.

As the fish was brought to the side of the boat, thery were greeted by a great white shark on the end of the line.

It was about four metres in length and one metre wide.

The shark had apparently swallowed their catch as they reeled it in and the line was still sticking out of its mouth.

They reacted quickly and cut the line.

The big shark swam away, much to their relief.
