Paeroa man killed in Te Urewera hunting incident

Police have an investigation under way after a man was fatally shot while hunting in the Te Urewera Ranges near Ruatahuna last Friday morning.

They responded to the incident after a personal locator beacon was activated on the Te Urewera Ranges at around 2am.

They located the body of a 63-year-old Paeroa man and a scene examination was conducted.

Police said a man was assisting them with their inquiries. It is understood he was not known to the deceased man.

No arrest had been made or charges laid at this stage of the investigation.

A post-mortem examination was completed today and inquiries continue.

‘’Our thoughts and condolences are with the deceased man’s family at this difficult time, and we are working hard to determine exactly what occurred,” police said in a statement.

“We urge anyone who owns or uses firearms to follow the seven rules of firearm safety, which include —
