Mental health awareness and fundraising is on the cards later this month at a charity cricket event.

“The Sunshine Eights is a day of cricket, supported by local businesses since 2020,” organiser Tyler Phelps said.

“The purpose is to raise awareness and funds for issues that aren’t talked about enough — mental health. Everyone is welcome to sign up and play.

“The format is made for good times: fast-paced games, eight overs, eight players on a team, with drinks and food available. Sunshine Brewery is sponsoring Gisborne Gold kegs, so you won’t go thirsty.

“The previous two events (formerly the Movember Friendly) raised around $9000 for the Movember Foundation. This year they’re hoping to have a local impact by also supporting charitable group #Hear4U who advocate for men’s mental health here in Tairāwhiti.

“Anyone keen to join can sign up as a team or as an individual using the QR code. Either way, it’ll be a great day out for a great cause.”

The event will be at Harry Barker Reserve on January 21.
